Last night, I worked with children to create posters that celebrate the accomplishments of great visionaries, leaders, athletes, entertainers, who are African American. Rather than focus on historical information, we discussed the powerful character traits of courage and conviction that Dr. Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman and others had and the enduring gifts they gave to others. During the workshop, I commented on the amazing art one of the teenagers was making. She replied, "We never get to do this in school, we only learn from text books. Our teachers don't really care about us." My heart broke. This is my dream -- together let's keep art, creativity, and the ability to follow one's talents in ALL children's lives.
